Dang! Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that I planted all those plants in starter flats and the veggie garden? They’re all like children to me, each and every one. With the exception of three eggplant plants from The Herb Corner and two pepper plants from my best friend and gardening buddy, Steve, I started every last one of them from seed; so you might say that I have had an intimate relationship with them all.
On a beautiful, warm, and sunny day such as this one, I will often take the dog, go out to the garden, and notice all the plants, the tilt of the sun going into the Southern sky, and the absence of so many migratory birds, long since departed. I’ll also notice the feelings that come as I remember when I planted each and every one of the plants or seeds, the promise of a new growing season, and the joy (still) of seeing a seed sprout forth to fulfill its simple but magical quest of new life. No wonder Jack and the Beanstalk was one of my favs so many years ago. Lastly, I will be most appreciative of all the bounty that this season’s garden has offered and will continue to offer to my family, friends, neighbors, and to me.
I think it safe to assume that most, if not all, of the growers feel the same about what they grow or produce for the MGM. Bottom line is, unlike the big agribusiness boys, they too care about their products and have a relationship with the consumers of those products. It’s not always about the $$$. So remember, this is the time of the year when many of the growers crops are peaking for the summer season and the time for you to participate in that bounty, so come on down to the MGM and be part of it all.
The Market Cafe will be open for business this week, serving up lots of good grub to delight your taste buds and fill your tummy. Stop in the Parrish Hall, say hello, grab a bite to eat, a liquid refreshment, or both.
If you’re in the area, stop at the MGM booth, say hello, and check out our stash of goodies. We’ll be hawking the new 2014 t-shirts in different colors and styles. We’ll also have older MGM T-shirts, aprons, and MGM $5.00 GIFT CERTIFICATES that can be used at any vendor booth (great gift idea). All proceeds from sales and donations go to making the MGM work. You’ll also be able to enjoy great freshly brewed cup of coffee, on the house, courtesy of our friends at the Night and Day Coffee Shop, just up the street. They keep the wheels rolling for some of us folks at the MGM.
If you or someone you know has something of interest that you/they would like to share with the community, such as art, books, music, hobbies, nature studies, etc., please contact us at email@example.com to be considered for hosting a booth at the market. We also welcome non-profits of all sorts for consideration. In most cases we will supply you or your organization with a tent , chairs, tables, and electrical power if needed, all at no cost. All you’ll need to do is bring your info to share with the community; sounds like a win/win to me.
Here’s a list of scheduled vendors and their products for the week:
The Herb Corner will have green & red tomatoes, lettuce, swiss chard, peppers & eggplant. They might even have a few French Fingerling potatoes and should still have a good assortment of cut herbs and flowers. If you’re ready for those gorgeous fall mums, now’s the time, and here’s the place to pick them up. Get them while Diane and Phil still have a great selection of colors. They’ll also have a few hanging baskets with two colors per basket.
Hillstone will be back this week with their quality beef, other meats, and great hot-dogs; you won’t find this type of dog or anything like it in any store. They will also have SWEET CORN; come and get it!
Keeney Farm will have new potatoes, cukes, peppers, some string beans, MELONS, summer squash, tomatoes and more.
Yorkshire Meadows will have Lemon Curd , Strawberry/Rhubarb, Triple Berry, Concord Grape, and Strawberry/Kiwi Jam. Try one of the large Shortbread Cookies dipped in chocolate. Cakes, Crunch Desserts and assorted Scones will also be available. Lightweight crocheted necklaces in all colors can be had there and would make a great gift. They easily fit inside a Birthday card, making it easy to mail them. Why not sign up to take a Spinning or Knitting Class at Liz’s shop this summer?
Roosting Tree is scheduled to return with their great soy free eggs, jellies, and local artwork.
Between Two Rivers will be bringing great maple syrup and other maple items.
Udder Merry Mac will be with us this week with his great selection of lettuces, basil, English cukes, and other great hydro produce.
Andy, from Spring Meadows Farm will have lots of pastured eggs and produce.
Always Somethin’ Farm will be taking the week off, but do not fear, they’ll be back next week with their regular goat milk soap and cream products, tomatoes, garlic, and garlic braids.
